Bellavista Cloudforest Reserve

Bellavista is a rustic but comfortable ecolodge situated in the Tandayapa Valley, some 86 kilometres (53 miles) northwest of Quito. Bordering the Mindo-Nambillo Protected Forest and set in its own private reserve, the lodge enjoys a prime position at the top of the valley and has sweeping views over the cloudforest.

You don't have to venture far to appreciate the huge variety of birds in the area. The iconic plate-billed mountain toucan and rare toucan barbet can sometimes be seen in the trees right by the lodge's entrance, as well as at the fruit feeding station. Nectar feeders attract countless species of brightly hued hummingbirds.

The owner and other guides will take you out on the various trails to have the opportunity to see these birds and the rich variety of orchids and other plants. Mammals, including olinguitos and tayras, can also be seen.

The lodge has ten rooms across three houses, all with private bathrooms and showers. The restaurant looks out towards Pichincha Volcano and offers hearty Ecuadorian fare. The lodge also has a small living area where you can relax after a full day’s exploration, with a nice bar and a comprehensive library of books about all aspects of natural history in Ecuador.

Please note that this is undoubtedly a very unique place to visit for keen birders, but it does offer simple accommodation and facilities. Often the walking tracks can become extremely slippery due to the amount of rain the area receives.
