Sinharaja was declared a national park in 1978 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989. From your accommodation, you are driven to the park entrance which may take up to 45 minutes due to the local road conditions. You meet your local guide who will accompany you into the park.
Once you reach the second gate, you leave your jeep behind and start walking along the trails which criss-cross the area. Some are well paved whilst others involve steep climbs and some clambering over fallen trees. Leeches love the damp conditions and you are advised to wear the leech socks provided.
The park is home to a wide range of birdlife including orioles, babblers, the orange minivets and rare Sri Lankan blue magpie. You may also see bear faced monkeys, mongoose, barking deer and sambar.
