Finch Bay Hotel

Finch Bay Hotel

The Galapagos Islands

Finch Bay, named after the famous Darwin’s finches abundant in the area, is a comfortable hotel in a prime position in the Galapagos.

The rooms and the hotel restaurant are set in low-rise modern buildings designed to blend into their natural surroundings, with an airy lounge opening out to the terrace and swimming pool. Here you can relax with a cool drink while looking out onto the beach, which is just steps away from the property's main entrance.

OUR OPINION:

This is quite simply one of the best places to stay in the Galapagos for some time on dry land. Where else could you relax in a swimming pool with a great heron perched next to you?

Rooms

The hotel offers a mixture of rooms and suites. The Garden View rooms are predominantly twin configuration, although there are several that do feature king size beds. All have balconies with hammocks and garden views, air conditioning and a safe. There are no TVs, but complimentary Wi-Fi access is available. Bottled purified water is also provided to guests and can be refilled daily. The Ocean View Suites are larger and slightly elevated, with balconies looking out onto the bay and ocean.

Location

The hotel is located on Santa Cruz Island, which is the principal arrival point in the Galapagos Islands and has many attractions of its own. This location means it works well for both land-based stays in the Galapagos and when combined with a cruise. The hotel itself is situated around 15 minutes away from the main town of Puerto Ayora, which has a good choice of shops and restaurants. It's also just steps away from the only public beach on the island.

Food and drink

Finch Bay’s main restaurant is open all day. It's an elegantly decorated space, yet offers a pleasantly informal atmosphere. The buffet breakfast features a wide choice of cereals, fresh fruits, cold meats, cheeses and pastries — you can also request an omelette made to order. For lunch and dinner, high quality and imaginative local and international cuisine is on offer. While the quality of the food means that eating here can be expensive, it's worth trying dinner here at least once during your stay if you fancy a special treat. Many of the vegetables used in dishes are sourced from the property's own organic garden, and special dietary requirements can be catered for.

Facilities and activities

The hotel’s outdoor pool is a wonderful place to relax and often attracts some interesting visiting birds! From this area guests also have direct access to the nearby beach, which is calm and sheltered. The hotel can also assist in arranging a variety of optional activities for you, such as kayaking in the bay, scuba diving, horse riding and mountain biking in the highlands. Those who have chosen to book on longer tour-inclusive packages with the hotel will also be able to take some excursions on the Finch Bay’s own yacht.

Environmental and social responsibility

The property is committed to promoting sustainability and does a great deal to help minimise its impact on the local environment — it even has its own water treatment plant. Energy saving measures are also in place, such as the use of solar panels, movement sensors and insulation. All toiletries use biodegradable ingredients, and there's a composting system in place to ensure minimal waste. Staff also help to clean the beach each day, and guests are welcome to give them a hand.
