Elephants at the E.L.I.E. NGO Elephant Project

E.L.I.E. NGO Elephant Project

Today you will visit the Elephant Livelihood Initiative Environment E.L.I.E., located 20 minutes outside of Sen Monorom along a good, flat road (although it gets a bit bumpy toward the end of the journey). Here you can learn more about Cambodia's elephants and the efforts to protect them in the area. This is truly a unique experience to see elephants cared for in their natural environment and the views around the area are impressive. Trained mahouts accompany you while you walk with these magnificent animals and the day normally comprises two short treks through the jungle to view different families in two separate herds. If you are fortunate you may also spot some of the wildlife in the area such as gibbons and eagles.

Returning to the town you can visit a local ethnic minority village of the Phnong before ascending a viewing point near Sen Monorom town which provides a stunning vista for seeing the surrounding area and watching the sunset.

It should be noted that the organisation is not established to the level of other elephant camps in Southeast Asia and a reasonable level of fitness is required as the elephants are located in the picturesque valley and it is a fairly steep walk back to your car.
