Hiking on Root Glacier, Alaska

Half Day Glacier Hike

Hiking on Root Glacier, Alaska

Depart Kennicott on a two-mile trail that was originally built in the 1920s as a wagon road. Along the way stops will be made to discuss glaciology and local geology and take in the spectacular views of the rock-covered Kennicott Glacier and the surrounding mountain peaks.

At the base of the Root Glacier, you will strap on crampons and, with simple instruction, begin walking on the glacier. Numerous glacial streams have cut deep ravines in the ice, and form shimmering blue pools and waterfalls. After enjoying lunch with a view you and your guide will begin making your way back to the town of Kennicott.

Total duration is around five hours.
