Sat in the shadow of Nevis Peak, Montpelier Plantation & Beach is built around one of the island's 18th century sugar plantations. An important piece of Nevis history, Horatio Nelson married Fanny Nisbet, the niece of the President of Nevis, under the boughs of a silk cotton tree in the hotel’s grounds.
Once one of the richest plantations in the Caribbean, it was left derelict until the 1960s when it was converted into a luxurious boutique hotel. Historical features have been incorporated into the hotel including the sugar mill itself — now a fine-dining restaurant. It’s run by the Hoffman family who are a welcoming presence on site.
This beautifully restored hotel, with a fascinating history, is an ideal hideaway in which to appreciate a relaxed, Caribbean way of life. A family owned property, the staff outnumber the guests two to one, providing attentive and thoughtful service. With stylish rooms, manicured gardens and innovative cuisine, it’s won numerous awards as one of the best boutique hotels in the Caribbean.

Rooms
The 19 contemporary rooms are all individually designed with stone walls and wooden shutters leading onto private verandas. Understatedly elegant, the rooms have air conditioning and Wi-Fi.
Location
The hotel sits in tropical gardens with hammocks swinging between the frangipani trees. The uninterrupted rainforest leading to Nevis Peak lies behind the hotel, whilst the Botanical Gardens are just five minutes' walk away. The capital of Nevis, Charlestown, is a 20-minute drive away with a range of shops, markets and restaurants.
The hotel provides complimentary transfers to its private beach, a 15-minute drive away, several times a day. The small, dark-gold sand beach is dotted with cabanas to relax in the shade.
Food and drink
The hotel has three restaurants and two bar areas with menus focussing on the fresh, organic food available.
Breakfast is served in the aptly named Breakfast Terrace, with à la carte and buffet options. The poolside restaurant, Indigo, serves à la carte lunches and dinners in a relaxed setting — their sharing platters come recommended. Afternoon tea is also served for guests in the afternoon.
Restaurant 750 is open for dinner, serving contemporary cuisine alongside an array of fine wines and the sommelier is on hand to assist with your choice.
The tiny Mill Privee is home to the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, built inside an 18th century sugar mill. Open for dinner, it serves six-course tasting menus in a candlelit setting. Please note that gentlemen are required to wear long trousers when dining in the hotel's main restaurant.
Families
Children are welcome over the age of five years. The hotel has a range of toys and games in the play room with babysitters available. A children’s menu is available and family picnics can be enjoyed on the hotel’s private beach.
Local excursions
The hotel offers a selection of tours including day trips to Saint Kitts, island hikes, horse riding or golf at the nearby Four Seasons hotel. Bikes are available for hire to explore the island. Various water sports can be arranged including snorkelling trips and sailing.
Spa Facilities
Tucked away in a quiet corner of the gardens, there is a spa treatment area. Screened off by bamboo, one side is open to take advantage of sweeping views down to the sea, although curtains can be pulled across if you prefer more privacy. Massage is a speciality, offering Swedish massage and a traditional ginger and lemongrass hot stone massage.
