Ura village

Ura & Flaming Lake

Visit Ura village, lying in the highest of Bumthang's valleys, at around 3,100 m. Ura leads into the easternmost regions of Bhutan and is located immediately below the Thrumshing La (pass) at 3,800 m.

Although it has grown more prosperous since the construction of the main road to the east, the village is almost medieval in aspect, with a narrow stone road leading to the temple, and most of the houses have wooden shingles covering the roof. In this area, very few varieties of food can be grown and a generally subsistence diet of potatoes coupled with herding on the pastures is found.

On your return, you stop at the Flaming Lake (Membartsho). Here a wooden bridge adorned with prayer flags crosses the Tang Chhu (river) where the 16th century religious leader Pema Lingpa discovered sacred artefacts hidden by the saint Guru Rinpoche. After stopping at the Flaming Lake it is possible to walk back to Jakar which takes approximately two hours. The walk is along the road that descends back to the town of Jakar.
