Vang Vieng has long been a popular spot for backpackers seeking outdoor adventure, but with new comfortable accommodation options, and a government initiative to improve its reputation, the area is undergoing a renaissance. The town is nestled in a valley on the banks of the Nam Song River, and is a convenient stopping-off point for those making the journey overland between Luang Prabang and Vientiane. Whilst the drive takes you though some of the most spectacular scenery in Laos, hairpin bends and steep roads render the journey unsuitable for those who suffer from travel sickness.

Kayaking, Vang Vieng, LaosVang Vieng is surrounded by dramatic limestone karsts and offers a full range of outdoor pursuits including tubing, kayaking, rock climbing, as well as trekking and cycling to nearby caves and villages. The organic farm is also well worth a visit for a taste of the locally-produced Mulberry Tea, or try out one of the cookery courses on offer. The town has a range of bars and restaurants within easy walking distance of the riverside hotels, which is where we recommend that you stay. There is a small hospital, post office and a choice of ATMs, as well as a number of places to rent bicycles — a great way to get around.
