Fiji is a place where you can come across jungle-ensconced waterfalls, or dive on soft coral reefs teeming with tropical fish. Our South Pacific specialists have a real fondness for Fiji, visiting to find the islands’ tucked-away beaches, prime snorkelling spots and more authentic resorts. They’ll piece together a tailor-made holiday to Fiji that can, if you’re interested, take in the country’s many sides.
Visit its island idylls and lounge in its finest hotels, or venture to its more intrepid corners, such as the almost-off-the-grid Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands, with their tiny fishing and farming villages. Fiji is undoubtedly undergoing development, but our team can steer you toward the islands’ quieter areas and enhance your trip with experiences gleaned from their own travels. They’ll recommend everything from the best local dishes to where to hear traditional harmony singing at a Fijian church service.

Useful information for planning your holiday in Fiji
English is the official language of Fiji, though many Fijians are multilingual and speak their vernacular Fijian or Fiji-Hindi.
The currency of Fiji is the Fiji dollar (FJ$ or FJD). You’ll find ATMs in larger cities and credit cards are accepted in most hotels and restaurants in major destinations, but cash is preferred in more rural areas and on smaller islands.
In Fiji, you should try kokoda (marinated fish), palusami (coconut cream cooked in a taro leaf), and fish suruwa (fish curry). Fish and seafood are staples on the menu in Fiji, often cooked in lolo (coconut cream), while slow-cooked pork is reserved for special occasions. Most meals are accompanied by a root vegetable such as yam, cassava, or taro, and you’ll often find meals are an infusion of Fijian, Polynesian, Indian, Chinese, and Western influences.
Traditional Fijian feasts involve using a lovo (underground oven) to cook suckling pig and a variety of vegetables. Many Fijian resorts and hotels recreate the tradition and have a weekly lovo buffet night accompanied by traditional dance.
The national drink in Fiji is yaqona (kava), a bitter, earthy sprit made from the roots of the pepper plant.
Tipping is not expected or encouraged in Fiji, but if you feel that the service or food has been particularly good, tips are always appreciated.

In Fiji, you should never touch another person’s head because it’s considered the most sacred part of the body. If you’re visiting a village, bring a gift for the chief and dress modestly with clothes that cover your shoulders and knees. Remove your hat and sunglasses — only the chief can wear them — and avoid visiting on a Sunday, it’s considered a family day.
If you’re lucky enough to be invited into someone’s house, bring a small gift, remove your shoes before entering, and wait to be told where to sit. At meals, wait for a blessing before you begin. If you’re offered a welcome drink of yaqona, take a sip, and pass it on.
In Fiji, you can laze on a soft, sandy beach, snorkel or dive on reefs teeming with tropical fish, visit local villages, trek through jungle, or sail and kayak across translucent seas. A visit is all about relaxation, soaking up the sun, discovering marine life, and learning about Fiji’s rich and vibrant culture.
You could cruise between islands discovering secluded beaches and hidden coves, visit highland villages to attend a kava ceremony, hike to waterfalls, or take in some world-class diving. Fiji has a strong conservation diving scheme, and you can help plant new coral gardens, clean clam nurseries, or tidy up reefs while on a dive. Alternatively, you can dive with manta rays or sharks and learn about their role in the marine ecosystem.
In Fiji, you can stay in traditional thatched bures next to the ocean, private island villas, or a resort offering golf, water sports and a spa. Fiji has a great range of places to stay and whether you’d prefer a lively resort with a choice of restaurants or a more secluded getaway perfect for a romantic retreat, our specialists can help you find the right stay.
For example, you could opt for an indulgent adults-only retreat with overwater bungalows and beachfront villas with private plunge pools, an intimate hillside lodge in a quiet location, an eco-resort with its own dive school, or a private island escape where you’ll share your stay with only a handful of other guests.

In Fiji, most visitors stay on the Yasawa Islands. On a short trip you could stay on Viti Levu or the nearby Mamanuca Islands, while more remote Vanua Levu and Taveuni are good options if you have more time. Visiting more than one island gives you a better sense of what Fiji is like, whether you’re after pristine beaches and thatched fishing villages in the Yasawa Islands or in search of cultural traditions, volcanic landscapes, and reef and wall diving in Taveuni. If you’re short on time, manmade Denarau Island offers a choice of resorts and a golf course close to the airport.
It takes around 27 hours to fly from the UK to Fiji.
The time zone in Fiji is UTC+12 hours. Daylight Savings Time isn’t observed.
The best way to get around Fiji’s larger islands is by car. For example, you can rent a car on Viti Levu, the largest island, and traffic is generally light outside the towns. If you’d prefer not to drive, we can arrange a private car with driver, or you could take a taxi, but it’s a good idea to agree the fare before starting your journey.
With 300 or so islands, boat travel is also a great way to get around, and you can take a ferry from Viti Levu to the Yasawa Islands or take a cruise to see several groups of islands.
UK citizens don’t need a visa to visit Fiji for stays of up to four months. Citizens of other countries should check their visa requirements.
Your doctor can provide you with vaccine advice for Fiji, but you should also ensure you’re up to date with the recommended vaccinations for your home country. You can also check the suggested vaccinations on the Travel Health Pro website.
Your passport must be valid for at least six months longer than your intended stay in Fiji.
